Are Retractable Pergola Awnings Waterproof?

The Right Solution for Your Pergola

We receive many enquiries about waterproof retractable pergola awnings, so it’s important to clarify how our system is designed. Our retractable pergola awnings are made from a porous, high-quality mesh fabric, allowing rainwater to pass through rather than collect on the surface. This prevents excess weight from building up, which could otherwise damage the awning or pull it down.

For flat pergolas, we do not recommend using a waterproof fabric. Instead, the safest and most durable solution is to install a solid, rigid roof—such as polycarbonate sheets or glass-like panels. This gives you the benefit of natural light from above, while the retractable awning provides shade, heat reduction, and glare control when needed.

In some situations, we can offer a non-porous acrylic canvas. This is only suitable if the pergola already has a sufficient roof pitch—such as under a leaning pergola—or if the wires can be installed at an angle to create proper water run-off. Adequate drainage is essential to prevent water pooling and potential fabric damage.
