BRIEF
We were approached by the Architectural firm who had been instructed to design a large renovation project of the property and its gardens.
The landscape design incorporated various areas for seating, lounging, and bathing, which we all to be constructed from wood. We were supplied with architectural drawings to enable us to quote for the project before the carpentry work had begun.
Due to the sheer size of the seating areas, it was important that the cushions could be left outside for most of the year, withstanding brief showers and classic British summertime weather.
SOLUTION
Although the architect had supplied designs to quote from, the joinery company were constructing the seating areas by hand. This meant that our design team felt more confident in collecting the design for the cushions after the seating areas had been constructed, to ensure a perfect, bespoke fit.
Using our 3D-laser scanner, our design team collected scans of the seating areas. This allowed us to study what had been produced, against the original plans for any sizing discrepancies prior to production commencing.
To produce cushions, which could withstand the unpredictability of our British weather, we recommended using a waterproof, 100% solution-died acrylic canvas. To ensure any water, pooling on the surface of the wooden seating area, wouldn’t be absorbed up into the foam, we recommended using a reticulated foam. This has a very different construction than that of a typical open-cell upholstery foam, encouraging breathability throughout the foam pad. The base of the cushion was made in mesh, to ensure that water can escape.
We recommended ordering a large overall cover to provide extra protection to the cushions when in situ, especially when the seating area would go without use for periods of time. Although the cushion fabric is waterproof, it still requires protection from dirt, organic matter, pollutants, and local wildlife.
