BESPOKE SAIL SHADES

BRIEF
This Architectural client had designed new offices for their staff to work from. The building was just over a year old when we were approached to find a solution to the working temperatures to the offices. There was a vast amount of glass on the south facing side of the building and was essentially heating the space inside mimicking that of a green house.
It was just as important to the client that the shades were aesthetically pleasing as well as practical.
SOLUTION
C&J advised the perfect solution to the problem would be to design two bespoke sail shades to be fixed to the outside of the glass to reduce and control the heat from penetrating into the offices. The building’s construction was oak framed and therefore welcomed stainless steel fastenings which could be bolted through, permanently tensioning the shades.
Sail Shades can be excellent solar defences, and traditionally were made from sail cloth. However, they can often cover large surface areas with minimal attachment points which can cause significant damage to buildings when erected in bad weather. Using a mesh helps reduce the windage, by allowing it to pass through the fabric.
Soltis Horizon 86 is marketed as a solar control mesh and can reduce up to 80% of the heat and UV from passing through the fabric, while still allowing some natural light to pass into the working space.
