The Brief
Our client in Esher, Surrey, wanted to make the most of his large outdoor terrace — a beautifully designed space that offered plenty of room for dining, lounging, and entertaining. However, without any shading, the terrace could become uncomfortably hot and overexposed during the summer months.
The goal was to introduce shade in a way that was elegant, low-maintenance, and sympathetic to the clean lines of the property’s architecture — without the need for complex motorised systems or bulky structures.
Our Solution
We designed and installed three individually retractable pergola awnings, each suspended from its own set of discreet stainless steel tensioned wires. This minimalist approach allowed us to provide effective shade while maintaining the open, airy feel of the terrace.
Each awning operates via a manual strap and clip system, making them easy to extend or retract as needed. When pulled out, the awnings provide broad, dependable cover for each defined area of the terrace. When not in use, they simply clip back along the guide wires, preserving the view and clean aesthetic of the space.
By installing two stainless steel wires per awning — tensioned securely between structural joists — we ensured both visual lightness and functional stability, even in breezy conditions.
